April 14, 2010
HIGH Country commercial beef producers underpinned a sale average of $3,979 at Welcome Swallow Angus today.
The stud's fifth sale was hosted by principals Jim and Suzy Martin on-property at Benalla.
A total of 36 bulls were offered and sold for a top of $6,500 gross of $143,250 and average of $3,979. This compared to last year's average of $3,021 for 35 bulls. Buyers attended from Alexandra, Mansfield, Benalla, Yea, Wangaratta, Myrtleford, Echuca, Darlington and King Island. The top-priced bull at $6,500 was bought by new client Graeme Brown of ScotchmanOB Angus stud at Portarlington.
The 722kg bull, Welcome Swallow Foresight, was sired by US bull Woodhill Foresight and ranked in Breedplan's top 10 per cent for marbling and 400-day growth."It was a pretty good sale - the prices were not over the moon today," Mr Brown said. Vendor Jim Martin said the sale drew strong support from repeat high country clients. Among the major buyers was Doug Collins' King Island Beef, with three bulls to a top of $5,500.
